How To Get The Most Money For Your Junk Car

Automotive Blog

That old broken down car in your driveway might be worth a lot more money than you think. Yes, the car might look like a piece of junk, but there are still precious metals and parts that have a lot of value located in that piece of junk. Your job, if you want to get the full value of the car, is to remove as much of the precious metals and parts as you can so you can either turn them into an auto recycler separately (and for more money than if they were still part of the car) or sell the parts on your own. For example, a catalytic converter can sell anywhere from a few dollars to $70 dollars or more. Here is how you can scrap a catalytic converter to get more money than if you scrapped it as part of the car.

You Will Need:

  • Safety Glasses
  • Breathing Mask
  • Jack
  • Jack Stands
  • Reciprocating Saw
  • Heavy-Duty Gloves

Raise Car

The catalytic converter is connected to the exhaust system that runs underneath your car. The converter kind of looks like a small muffler and is situated near the front end of the exhaust system between the actual muffler and the engine block. You will need to raise your car so you can slide under it to cut the converter out. Raise the front end until you can comfortably slide under the car by the front passenger or driver's door. Use your jack stands to stabilize the car so it doesn't fall while you are working underneath the vehicle.

Removing Converter

Make sure you put on your safety glasses and breathing mask before you start to remove the catalytic converter. The converter will probably have a lot of rust on it and you don't want to get that and tiny pieces of metal into your eyes and lungs while you are sawing the pipes holding converter to the exhaust system. Take your reciprocating saw and cut through both ends where the converter is connected to the exhaust pipes. Pull the converter out from under the car – be careful, the ends of the pipes connected to the converter can be very sharp. Jack the car up a little, remove the jack stands, and lower the car back onto the ground.

Added Value

If you want to get a little more for the catalytic converter, you should take the converter apart, too. A catalytic converter uses rare metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium that are worth more separately than they are together in the converter. Outstanding Automobile Repair

Understanding more about the type of car that you have can help you understand the best ways to maintain it, and how to tell if there’s trouble brewing under the hood before you end up stranded. That’s why, when I found a car make that I liked, I kept going back to it every time I bought a new car. It’s also why I use a mechanic that specializes in repairing and maintaining cars made by my specific manufacturer type. Over the years, I’ve learned so much about what makes this particular car work, and what kind of quirks come with this type of vehicle. I started this blog to share some of that information and help other car owners learn to effectively maintain their automobiles and recognize the potential signs of trouble.
